Very Important Strangers

You’re nervous. This is normal. The act of standing up in front of a room full of strangers and telling stories is not normal. Moreover, if you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you’re also likely a nerd-type person, which means your people skills are… unique.

To compensate for this nervousness, I give myself the illusion of structure by following the same pre-game for the two hours before a talk, and it looks like this:

To help clients appreciate the benefits of asking me to solve a problem rather than implement a solution, I often use a simple metaphor. Don’t ask for a window in the kitchen if what you ultimately want is to eat breakfast in the sunshine. Focus on what success means to you.

I’ve let go of (not all, but many) qualities of Pentecostalism I once had, and I often think about redeeming them. It’s difficult without a community that wants to do it as well, though.

In short, by eschewing the church and the practices of doxological gratitude I think progressives have often failed to attend to the heart. To be clear, progressive Christians are amazing theologians. In the pews they may be the best theologians in all of Christianity. But theological sophistication can be a trap. It trapped me. In my head.

But as I learned in the charismatic worship at Freedom, the heart has a way of knowing that the head knows nothing about.

If, like me, you do not have magical corneal calculators, then you probably have utilized one of the tools out there to check contrast, such as: WebAIM’s color contrast checker, Snook’s contrast slider, Check my colors URL input check, or a WCAG checker add-on for Firefox.
